Mr. Stead's 4th Grade Electricity Fair

Electricity Fair!
Project Due Date May 30th
 Electricity Fair May 31st

In class, we will be doing a science unit that covers circuits and electricity.  Students will be required to do a project that helps them investigate the topics we are covering in class.  I will be sending home a sample packet of project ideas, but I wanted to get students and parents thinking about the project now.

The electricity fair has become a highly anticipated event in our school.  Each year, we are looking for bigger and better projects that will excite and amaze.  I will be sending home more information about the event, but students should start looking for project ideas, now!

Students should have a project and a prepared explanation about the science behind the project.  Projects will be displayed to the other classes during a mini-fair (I will send home more information about the schedule for the fair).  Other students will walk through our classroom as students from our class explain how their projects work.  If a project has any special requirements, (it needs an extra table, it needs special hangers, needs to be prepared in advance, etc.) please let the teacher know in advance.

Students should have an understanding of these terms and concepts: circuits, conductors, insulators, resistors, switches, voltage, positive terminal, negative terminal, series circuits, parallel circuits, and circuit boards.

  • All projects should be accompanied by a poster that explains the science behind the student’s project.  The poster should be at least 18x24 inches.  This should be checked for spelling, grammar and neatness.

  • It is expected that students will need some help from parents on this project.

  • Parents should help their child prepare a short explanation or demonstration of his/her project (1-3 min.).

  • Parents will be invited to the fair.

  • No projects that involve shocking Mr. Stead.

  • Original ideas are encouraged.

  • Many of the supplies you may need for projects can be taken from old toys or electronics.

  • Using new technology is also encouraged.

Parents,

In order to have a variety of projects for the fair, I would like to know in advance what project your child is planning on doing.  If you could fill out this sheet and return it to me on or before April May 8th.  It would be greatly appreciated.
